Brahms @ 190: Celebrating Brahms's 190th Anniversary

Saturday 29 April 2023
Violinist Susan Pierotti and cellist Zoe Knighton join forces with pianist Brian Chapman to present an all-Brahms feast of chamber music to mark the 190th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The program will commence with the pastoral "Regenlied” Sonata in G major, Op.78 for violin and piano, so named because of its incorporation of music from Brahms’s “Rain Song” Op.59 into each of the three movements. The first half concludes with the expansive Sonata in E minor, Op.38 which grows from the elegiac lyricism of the first movement, through the charming dance-like middle movement, to the thrilling contrapuntal drama of the finale. After Interval the concert will conclude with the mighty Trio in B major, Op.8, comprising four symphonically conceived movements endowed with broad, generous melodies and culminating in a brilliant conclusion.
