The South Coast Writers Centre presents The Business of Publishing: a symposium presenting perspectives on Australian publishing from authors, editors, literary curators and publishers. Hear from industry professionals, learn about publishing models and trends, ask your burning questions, and find out what’s happening in Australian publishing today.

SATURDAY MAY 22ND

2pm – 2:40pm: Anthologies & the Small Press

Winnie Dunn, Editor with Sweatshop; Lore White, Editor in Chief of Baby Teeth Journal; and Sarah Nicholson, Editor of Heroines Anthology – facilitated by SCWC’s Events & Communications Manager Adara Enthaler.

What’s the place of the small press in publishing? What can they offer authors? Why would you want to and how can you create your own publications?

2:50pm – 3:50pm: Publishing – The Authors

Olivia Lanchester, CEO of Australian Society of Authors; author Pamela Cook, and author Alan Baxter - with facilitator Dr. Jackie Bailey.

This panel will discuss publishing from the perspective of authors: what’s the current publishing environment for writers who want to get books published? What are the possibilities and the pitfalls of commercial publishing? What are the other publishing models?

4pm- 5pm: Publishing – The Publishers

Tom Langshaw, Editor from Pantera Press; Xavier Hennekinne, Publisher from Gazebo Books; and Laura Brading, from Well Read - with facilitator Mary Van Reyk.

This panel will discuss publishing from the perspective of publishers and literary curators. What’s going on in Australian publishing? Are there differences between the Australian and overseas markets? What are publishers looking for and what are the opportunities for authors?
