A Pedagogical Approach to Early Writing: Dr Noella Mackenzie
About
“To become truly literate, children need to learn to create, comprehend and use single mode (written, visual or spoken) and multimodal texts” (Mackenzie, 2022).In this presentation, a pedagogical approach to early writing, referred to as “Draw, Talk, Write, Share” (DTWS), based upon research conducted by the presenter (Mackenzie, 2011, 2014) will be shared. DTWS creates the space for students to explore their meaning making processes through drawing and talking, with writing introduced as an additional mode of meaning making. This approach is highly successful during the first two years of school.
Noella will discuss why Reading Recovery students could benefit if their class teacher implemented DTWS. She will also consider why DTWS could also work with Reading Recovery students during Roaming Around the Known.
