Unit 1 Introduction to Poetry: (4 Weeks – 1hour lesson per week)This unit of study is an introduction to the beauty of poetry and is designed for 12-16 yr old students. Through exposure to some of the best poems in the English language, from celebrated British, American, and Australian poets of the 17th-20th century, we will
discover the answer to questions like:
What is poetry? Why is it important? Why should we read it? How can we properly
understand poetry?
Further, we will learn how poetry is constructed, how to identify the elements of poetry,
and how to develop a deeper understanding of poetry.
Regrettably, the current study of poetry and literature are
looked at from a postmodern/relativistic viewpoint. However,
this course is designed to understand poetry and literature
from within its historical context and how it informs the
Christian worldview.
