Year 3 to Year 6: Building fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension across the middle years
This session will outline the what, why and how of Primary English in the middle and upper primary years:
• After phonics: Teaching spelling
• Isolated versus integrated reading fluency practices
• Reading with faded guidance
• Volume and complexity of texts (an ambitious, rich, diverse text curriculum)
• Writing as a tool for reading and learning
• The writing process and genre
• Reading assessment principles and practices in middle and upper primary
• Time allocation and overall fit
This session is designed to be practical, research-aligned, and responsive to the unique contexts of participating schools.
