AIA-ACT - Cowra visit & Memorial Ceremony 8-9 Nov 25 - FREE
About
AIA NSW have invited AIA-ACT to join in a celebration of the Indonesian Hero’s Day (Hari Pahlawan) at Cowra over the weekend 8-9 Nov 25.In 1943, about 1,200 Indonesian seaman and political prisoners of the Dutch were sent to Australia and interned in the Prisoner of War (PoW) camp in Cowra. Before their release 13 Indonesians died in Cowra and are buried together in the Indonesian Section of the Cowra Cemetery.
For many years AIA NSW and AIA-ACT have joined with the Indonesian Embassy to travel to Cowra to honour the brave Indonesian Freedom Fighters by holding a formal wreath Laying Ceremony at the Indonesian graves and try to align it with Hero’s day which is 10 Nov each year.
It has often just been a day trip but this is the second year AIA-NSW has planned a two day program and invited AIA-ACT to join if we wish. Their program is:
• Saturday 8th November (1pm – 4pm) – Reception at Cowra Council Chambers, ceremonial ringing of the Peace Bell and visit the Cowra POW Campsite.
• Saturday 8th November (6pm) – Dinner hosted by AIA including brief speeches, and presentation of gifts.
• Sunday 9th November – At 9am, the Wreath Laying ceremony will be held at the Indonesian Graves in the Cowra Cemetery, including prayers from Imam and speeches.
• Sunday 9th November – At 10.30am enjoy morning tea at the Japanese Garden following the Wreath Laying ceremony.
Please register here if you wish to attend any or all of the activities, and President, Les Boag, will contact you with further coordination details.
