George Pipilas – Biography
George Pipilas was born in 1968 in Larissa, Greece. He graduated from the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science at Thessaloniki and has worked as a physical education teacher in secondary education since 2002. Coming from a family deeply connected to tradition—his father, a classical philologist and folklore researcher, left behind a collection of over 10,000 folk songs—George grew up immersed in Greek folk culture.
From an early age, he was drawn to traditional dance, beginning his training at the Hellenic Academy of Thessaloniki and later at the Lyceum of Greek Women in Naoussa. At age 20, while still a student, he began teaching children’s dance groups at L.E.N., eventually becoming the association’s principal instructor and revitalizing its dance and costume repertoire.
Through close collaboration with veteran Naoussa dancers born before 1930, George gathered valuable insights into local dance and costume traditions and completed a collection of songs from his hometown.
In 2006, with the founding of the Naoussa Environment and Culture Association “Arapitsa,” he became the lead dance teacher, a position he continues to hold. Over the years, he has taught in numerous dance groups across the Naoussa region and participated in many seminars on traditional dance. George has also shared his expertise internationally, teaching workshops and seminars in Greece, the USA, Canada, Germany, and Sweden.
