This session moves beyond the introduction to UDL and focuses on how educators can design powerful units, learning environments, and systems that foster learner agency, belonging, and independence. Participants will explore how Universal Design for Learning and social-emotional learning work together to create classrooms where every student feels valued, capable, and empowered to take ownership of their learning.

Through practical examples and collaborative design work, you will learn how to:

• Design UDL-aligned units that maintain firm learning goals while offering flexible pathways for success

• Integrate SEL and belonging into instructional design so students build confidence, identity, and collaboration skills

• Use blended learning structures to increase flexibility, access, and independence

• Shift from teacher-directed instruction toward student-led learning, reflection, and goal setting

This session will provide an overview of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework for those who are new to the world of UDL. The session is designed to provide an overview UDL, including the UDL guidelines, in preparation for the following sessions. The session will look at the scientific insights into how humans learn, and how this research underpins UDL, including learner variability and the three networks of the brain. This session is optional viewing, serving as an introduction to UDL for those who are new to the framework.
