SPRUKE 2017 — Brisbane's Ukulele Festival opens on Friday night 29 September with Spruketacular. International acts Ukulele Russ (USA), Kyas Ryo (Japan) and Manitoba Hal Brolund (Canada) headline with homegrown uke stars Tyrone & Lesley and The Pockets.
This is the first Aussie festival appearance for Kyas Ryo, known internationally for his style and flawless technique the virtuoso performer covers all genres of music from jazz, to rock, pop and original compositions.
Aussie festival favourite Ukulele Russ brings his unique take on popular songs and classic standards to Brisbane for the first time. Known for his off-the-cuff antics and fast hands, the wild man of ukulele combines everything from original songs to rock’n’roll, funk, bluegrass and hip-hop.
Canadian blues artist Manitoba Hal has forged an international reputation for engaging and connecting with his audience through songs that are mournful, hopeful, silly, romantic and introspective. He proves that the ukulele can be small but mighty as he pulls out powerful blues riffs and melodies, adding subtle but important accompaniment using looping technology.
Gentleman songsters, Tyrone and Lesley, perform their poignant, lively and unusual act on the ukulele, double bass and U-bass. With one foot on the music stage, and the other on the theatrical stage, their musical silliness always leaves you with a smile.
Tyrone, fresh from his triumphant appearance at the GNUF (Great Northern Ukulele Festival) in the UK, will enjoy even more of the spotlight as our MC for the evening.
The Pockets bring you original and cover tunes brimming with frivolity, nostalgia and romance. Marked by close harmonies and vocal interludes reminiscent of a 1940s radio show within the diverse genres of jazz, pop & folk, these songsters will charm your socks off.
