UPDATE: WE'RE GOING 100% VIRTUAL.
Join us on the Whova App
In 2019 we explored the challenges in osteoarthritis management.
In 2021, we are coming together once again to discuss the latest strategies, innovative practices, and pathways to better health outcomes for all people living with osteoarthritis.
The Forum will begin with the SOMA Day, a student-run event exploring The Research Journey: From Idea to Impact for students. Continuing the theme of impact, the next three days of the OPUS Forum explores how we shift our research to knowledge translation and meaningfully influence policies.
Featuring guest speakers presenting on topics such as:
- How important is patient selection for health system efficiency/effectiveness? Prof Erwin Loh (St Vincent's Health Australia)
- Big data for health policy: For researchers/clinicians Prof Stephen Duckett (Grattan Institute)
- What makes a decision "better"? Ethics, big data and patient-centred care Dr Ros McDougall (Uni of Melbourne)
- Understanding chronic pain Dr Kieran O'Sullivan (Uni of Limerick)
- The arthroscopic management of cam and pincer lesions of the hip Prof John O'Donnell (St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne)
- Can we get people home early post-surgery? What's the trade off? Prof Nicholas Taylor (La Trobe University)
- Modelling effective osteoarthritis care A/Prof Zanfina Ademi (Monash University)
- Barriers to accessing care: The patient perspective Mr Kevin James (OPUS Consumer Advocate)
Can't join us in-person? Join us virtually as we make full use of the conference app, Whova, to let you watch every session online, present your own research remotely from wherever you are and maybe even win a prize for being a social butterfly!

We invite registrations to all who are interested in musculoskeletal research: researchers and clinicians of all professions (surgeons, GPs, physios, biostatisticians, health economists), graduate students, and the general public.
Who are we and what are we about?
OPUS is a musculoskeletal clinical research centre dedicated to improving the treatment of patients with severe osteoarthritis (OA).
It is predicted that in the next 15 years, almost 2 million Australians will undergo total joint replacement surgery, the gold standard of OA treatment. This will come at a cost of almost $70 billion. Yet evidence has shown that one-third of patients may not meet the criteria for surgery and one fifth will be dissatisfied with the result. This indicates that people who are not going to benefit from surgery, are receiving it and unnecessarily exposing themselves to risk while extending the waiting time for those who would benefit from surgery.
This a health issue that we are addressing by re-designing the journey a person with OA would experience. We want to capitalise on the momentum we have generated by holding an OPUS Forum. This is an opportunity to open a dialogue about patient experiences, alternative therapies, cost efficiency, new technology, and methods to inform a new model of OA care to better serve patients.
