World Bee Day: An evening with a honey sommelier + beekeeper
To celebrate World Bee Day, on Thursday May 20, we've invited a certified honey sommelier and a local beekeeper to our Alphington Farmgate, in order to get better acquainted with these master pollinators, and their delicious immune-boosting nectar.
6.30pm -8pm.
Whether you're a honey and bee enthusiast, an aspiring apiarist, or simply just a foodie - come on down! There will, of course, be plenty of honey to sample! And all guests will enjoy:
- A guide honey tasting session with certified honey sommelier Jessica Locarnini, including a discussion of flavour profiles, terroir, a blind tasting of honey varietes and interactive tasting notes for each guest.
- A mead beverage (honey wine) and honey x cheese board to enjoy, accompanied by an introduction to honey pairings.
- A Q&A with Alphingtons' fave beekeeper (and MFM stallholder) Benedict, of The Practical Beekeeper, who will talk about hive locations, honey production methods and more.
About Jessica Locarnini:
Jess received her honey education in the USA with the American Honey Tasting Society and was trained by world renowned honey sensory analysis experts Marina Marchese and Gian Luigi Marcazzan. A passion for bees and honey led her to create 'Honey Merchant' in 2018. She is creating a community of beekeepers, honey connoisseurs, foodies, other food producers and specialists to help drive the Australian public's appreciation and enjoyment of the incredible and unique flavours of honey.
About The Practical Beekeeper:
A well-known registered beekeeper, Benedict Hughes is 'The Practical Beekeeper.' Benedict collects swarms, manages beehives and delivers educational courses. The Practical Beekeeper is an intergral part of the honey offering and bee education at our farmers' markets, and has also been heralded by the CWA for his honey ginger beer! Benedict will have jars of his amazing honey for sale on the evening as well.
