Working clinically with children, adolescents and families
This training will cover some important theoretical underpinnings, and practical considerations, associated with working clinically with children, adolescents, and families. We will discuss common emotional and behavioural difficulties experienced across childhood, and consider how mental health difficulties typically manifest in the developmental period. Common impacts of adverse childhood experiences on youth mental health will be discussed. We will also consider how family factors and child mental health are interrelated. We will discuss a range of practical strategies to facilitate engagement and communication with young people and their caregivers in the clinical context, as well as referral pathways for those who may need additional support.
There will be two sessions. This first session will be an introductory presentation on Tuesday 17 May . The second session held on Tuesday 14 June 2022 will provide the opportunity for case-based discussion, focusing on participants' application of knowledge acquired in Session 1 to their own work. Participants are encouraged to bring deidentified)clinical case material along for discussion during this second session.
