hero

We regret to inform you that the Munu Munu 2022 National Indigenous Fire Workshop at Mona Mona Far North Queensland on 8 -12 August 2022 has been postponed.

We made this difficult decision to postpone this event for the safety of the local community and all event participants, as the COVID-19 conditions change. We have been monitoring the situation as COVID-19 cases have increased across the nation in the past few weeks.

About Mona Mona

The name Mona Mona came from the Djabugay word Munu-Munu meaning crooked and is the name given to the winding Flaggy creek which runs through the old Mona-Mona mission. The Mona Mona Mission was in operation from 1913 until its closure in 1963. During this time Aboriginal people were forcibly removed from various tribes of Far North Queensland to the mission to be assimilated. Today a small community of Mona-Mona descendants still live at the old mission site.

About NIFW

The National Indigenous Fire Workshop has evolved from the Awu-Alaya Elders fire management project in Cape York that began in 2004. These on-Country Workshops have been held annually since 2008 and have been developed over the years to strengthen culture and share the importance of recognising and reviving Cultural Fire regimes to care for Country. This work is greatly respected and has gone on to inspire communities all over the country and brought people together to learn about Indigenous Cultural Fire and land management practices.

This will be the 12th annual National Indigenous Fire Workshop and after being away from Cape York for more than two years, with workshops being held in New South Wales on Yuin in 2018 and Victoria on Yorta Yorta Country in 2019, it is returning to Far North Queensland. Participants will gain an insight into Indigenous fire methodology and the cultural responsibility of looking after Country. As well as gaining knowledge, participants will be immersed in Indigenous culture and practice. Masterclasses are delivered in Cultural Fire, Indigenous Ethno-botany, weaving, tool making, dance, music, reading country and monitoring. Tickets cover the masterclasses and meals for 4 days. See more at: https://www.firesticks.org.au/munu-munu-2022-national-indigenous-fire-workshop/
