Triple K Class to Ballarat - Saturday 8th October 2022
Join us aboard The Vintage Train, as we head to Ballarat on our second commemorative tour to mark 100 years since the first K class steam locomotive (K100) entered service on the 22nd of August 1922. Featuring our three K class steam locomotives K100, K183 & K190 on a rare triple header run!
Departing from Southern Cross Station, the three Ks will run direct to Ballarat via Bacchus Marsh. After the train departs Melbourne, the train will pick up speed through the Western Suburbs and head out across the grassland plains towards Melton. After passing over the iconic 357-metre Melton Viaduct, built in 1885 to traverse the Werribee River, we will drop into the town of Bacchus Marsh, the half-way point of our journey. From here, the engines will work hard with our 11 carriage train to climb to the summit of the famous 1 in 48 Ingliston Bank, providing spectacular views back towards Melbourne & across the Werribee Gorge State Park.
Our train will then enter into the Western District's lush farming country and arrive into the historic gold mining town of Ballarat. Here there will be ample time to grab lunch and explore the city, only a few minutes walk from the Railway Station. The iconic Railway Refreshment Rooms will be open on Platform 1, where you can re-live the time before buffet cars were introduced on Victoria's great express trains.
While you are experiencing what the City of Ballarat has to offer, our Volunteers will be busy turning and servicing the locomotives at our Steamrail Ballarat East depot, ready for our journey back to Melbourne in the afternoon. Our train will return to Melbourne via the Golden Plains and Werribee travelling along the original mainline between Ballarat and Geelong from 1862. We will arrive back at Southern Cross Station at approximately 7.53pm.
For those who don't want to be confined to their compartment, the train will feature Club Car Moorabool with kiosk and open seating. We will also have our heritage luggage van 18CE opened up behind the locomotives as a viewing area to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the exciting triple header run.
