
In Conversation: The Role of the Film Colourist
Please join NFSA CEO Jan Müller for a discussion with the team of film colourists and colour historians working on the upcoming SBS series AUSTRALIA IN COLOUR.
The colour team working on the production - the French colourist Samuel Francois-Steininger and the colour historians Melanie Montfort & Jules Lury and the producer Jo-anne McGowan - will be joining us on Friday 13 July for an in conversation event about their work, the role of the colourist, and about the series.
Please join us for a discussion with the colourists. The NFSA cafe will be open serving refreshments before and after this event.
About Composite Films: Founded by Samuel Francois-Steininger in 2013, Composite Films specialises in the colourisation and restoration of film and archival footage, animation production and the the creation of new documentary content. In the space of four years, the studio has become a major player in the archive footage colourisation business, combining cutting-edge technology, artistic design and in-depth historical research. Their work includes the series AMERICA IN COLOR, a colourised series about American history between the 1920s and the 1960s. They have also restored and colourised footage for Raoul Peck’s I'M NOT YOUR NEGRO, which went on to win several prizes at various Film Festivals and was nominated at the 89th Academy Awards for Best Documentary. Samuel and colour historians Melanie Montfort & Jules Lury are in Australia to assist in the SBS/Stranger Than Fiction production AUSTRALIA IN COLOUR.
About Jo-anne McGowan: Jo-anne McGowan has worked as an independent producer for more than 20 years, specialising in documentary across all genres, with a particular passion for the arts. Her feature documentary DAVID STRATTON: A CINEMATIC LIFE was selected for Cannes Classics in 2017. A spin off 3 part TV series: DAVID STRATTON'S STORIES OF AUSTRALIAN CINEMA for the ABC was a ratings hit, with over 1.1 million views per episode. Most recently, she produced MOUNTAIN, a cinematic and musical collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), which has been selected for San Sebastian and London Film Festivals. She is currently producing AUSTRALIA IN COLOUR,
