Ut Unum Sint I: Ecumenism in Australia, Yesterday and Today
The year 2020 will mark 25 years since Pope John Paul II’s Ecumenical Encyclical Ut Unum Sint (That They May Be One). This was a landmark document in the history of the Catholic Church’s communication and friendship with other Christian Traditions. In the lead up to the 25th anniversary next year, ACEIR will be arranging a series of three lectures reflecting on the document. The series will invite speakers from several different Christian Traditions, along with members of the Catholic Church, to reflect on the document, the ecumenical imperative, and the true meaning of the Christian call to fraternity and unity.
This first Lecture in the series will reflect on Pope John Paul II’s Ecumenical Encyclical That They May Be One. We will discuss the Encyclical, it’s call to action, asking ourselves how far we have come, and how far we have still to go.

Rev. Dr. Gerard Kelly
Rev. Kelly is a professor of Theology at the Catholic Institute of Sydney. He is currently co-chair of the Australian Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue and is the chair of the Faith and Unity Commission of the National Council of Churches in Australia

Mr. Thomas Westenberg
Mr. Westenberg is the Executive Officer of the Archdiocesan Commission for Ecumenical Relations and a published historian. He has worked as a university lecturer in both Latin and Theology.
