In a world where we have access to so many sources of information both reliable and unreliable, it’s important to be able to spot a robust argument versus an opinion, determine what sort of audience an author is writing for, the importance of identity and sense of self in communication, and where people’s prejudices and fears can be manipulated.
Yianni Agisilaou is a stand-up comedian who has worked in Australia, the United Kingdom, the US and Europe and is known for making complex ideas fun and accessible in his comedy. He has won and been nominated for awards at festivals around the world where he has performed shows about artificial intelligence, gender roles, cosmology and quantum physics. He is a gifted improviser, and great at interacting with people of all ages.
In this workshop, Yianni will introduce participants to the concepts with stand-up comedy routines about various aspects of critical thinking and talking with them about these ideas. For example, regarding writing for a particular audience, how do you describe the party on the weekend to your parents versus your friends? How do real estate agents describe their listings? There’s also that one time Yianni sabotaged one of the world’s most common sources of information for a joke about the Simpsons.
Yianni will also go through some of his favourite conspiracy theories, and participants them how to create (or debunk) their own.
