The action is set in Trudy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. The outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy who, along with Annelle, dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, an eccentric millionaire, Clairee as well as McLynn and her daughter Shelby, a diabetic who risks her life to fall pregnant. The characters and the plot make this play truly touching, funny and marvellously memorable.
