Beneficial Insects 1 of 3 webinars - Parasitoids
About
Join Central Tablelands Local Land Services and Cesar Australia for the first beneficial insect webinar on Parasitoids. A parasitoid is an organism lives and develops on or within another organism (the host), eventually killing it. A number of insects can be parasitoids, with most wasps or flies. Why should we care about parasitoids? They are greatly important in insect management, as biological controls for pest species. One group of natural enemies are parasitoid wasps. At Cesar Australia, we are investigating the diversity of passion vine hopper parasitoids in and around Australia, with the purpose of identifying biological control candidates for introduction into New Zealand. Partway into the project, we are discovering a greater range of parasitoids than expected, spanning numerous wasp groups. Dr Samantha Ward presents an overview of this work, explaining why parasitoids are so important to the control of pest species.
