CORO AUSTRAL presents O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM
About
A Choral Celebration featuring:
'Missa O Magnum Mysterium' by Tomás Luis de Victoria
Motets by Carillo, Morales and Victoria
Carols from Colombia, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Venezuela
To celebrate the Advent/Christmas season, Coro Austral will take you on a journey from Spanish and Portuguese Renaissance to contemporary Latin America, stopping at Norway, Iceland, Germany, Italy and Ukraine on the way!
In the resonant acoustic of St Joseph’s Church, Rozelle, Coro Austral presents a concert featuring the soaring beauty of Tomás Luis de Victoria’s mass based on his famous setting of the Christmas-themed motet O Magnum Mysterium (O Great Mystery) written some twenty years earlier. Our concert will also showcase settings of this text by Renaissance Spanish composer Christobal de Morales and contemporary Venezuelan composer César Alejandro Carrillo.
17th century Portuguese composer Diogo Dias Melgás’ rarely heard Salve Regina (Hail Queen) will be complemented with a setting of Psalm 126, Shir hamma ‘alot (A Song of Ascents) by the 16th century Italian/Jewish composer Salamone Rossi.
Coro Austral’s journey of carols and villancicos will take you to Colombia (A Belén Pastores – To Bethlehem, shepherds), Iceland (Bára Grímsdóttir’s Ėg vil lofa eina þá – I will praise her), Norway and Germany (Ola Gjeilo’s setting of Hildegard von Bingen’s Ave Generosa – Hail, nobly born), Spain (Francisco Guerrero’s A un niño llorando al hielo – to a child crying in the snow, and the Catalán traditional Fum, Fum, Fum), and Ukraine (Mykola Leontovich’s famous Carol of the Bells, sung in Spanish).
