THE PARSON'S WIDOW (1920)
restored silent film with live music (Mauro Colombis), 70 minutes.
Tickets: $30/$25
Unlike Dreyer's much more famous films such as 'Vampyr' and 'The Passion of Joan of Arc', this film is refreshingly light with nice touches of subtle comedy. But perhaps the main attraction of this film is its beautiful setting in a rural Scandinavian village of times gone by. Dreyer's photography techniques and ability to capture the essence of characters and feelings are evident. His story about a young parson who must marry the previous parson's widow to get the job - and he can't marry his sweetheart unless he gets the job! This early film from the master director shines as an unpretentious lesson in tolerance with control of acting, lighting and framing. One 21st century critic wrote, 'Without any explicit explanation, and only the most spare of titles, we instantly understand whatever is going on. This sort of immediate expressive visual communication seems lost to the vast majority of filmmakers presently working'.
Stephen Robertson, cinephile and loyal supporter of the sessions, will introduce the Carl Theodor Dreyer classic.
