Roald Dahl’s, Matilda, The Musical
This delightful stage musical, adapted by Dennis Kelly, is based on the 1988 children's novel of the same name by Roald Dahl and features the music and lyrics of Tim Minchin.
Matilda is a story about a little girl with extraordinary powers. She is the daughter of obnoxious and abusive parents, and in order to escape her home life she finds refuge in library books which she reads at an astonishing rate as they provide her with an escape to create her own stories. When Matilda finally gets the opportunity to go to school, things are not much better and Matilda and the other children must face a cruel and frightening Head of School, Trunchbull, who believes that “Children are Maggots.”
Despite this, Matilda meets her teacher, Miss Honey, who is a kind and gentle soul, and the two develop a wonderful friendship. Matilda soon learns that she must stand up to the cruel adults who exist in her world and in doing so discovers her own remarkable powers.
Matilda’s bravery teaches Miss Honey and her classmates a very important lesson – that if something is not right, you need to stand up and make it right, even if it means “sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty”.
