ABOUT

We are thrilled to be holding the next New Zealand National Spearfishing Championships at Aotea/Great Barrier Island in 2026. Nationals at Great Barrier Island are always extremely popular and this Nationals we are returning to Orama in Karaka Bay.

As Aotea/Great Barrier Island is a remote island with limited accommodation, we ask anybody planning on attending to please book accommodation and any transport required ASAP so you don't miss out.

We have Orama for the duration of the Nationals from the 26th of January to the 1st of February, so you can arrive earlier than the competition days for scouting. Orama has a range of accommodation options available and you can also elect to add their full day, all meals provided menu or their dinner only menu.

Click here for information about Accommodation: Orama Accommodation Information Pack

Please book accommodation and any meal plans directly with Orama and let them know you are part of the Spearfishing Nationals:

Email: admin@orama.org.nz

Phone: (09) 4290 063

All attendees MUST attend the safety briefing held the night before each competition. Make sure you have arrived at Orama in time for your respective Safety Briefings.

All competitors should familiarise themselves with the NZ spearfishing competition rules:
In particular, take note of gear requirements (floats with flags etc): You will not be able to start if you do not have a qualifying float.
We recommend that you undertake a medical examination prior to participation in the event.

Open Championships: You are responsible for finding a partner to dive with. We will assist if we can.

Individual events (women's and juniors): you are responsible for arranging a safety observer who will accompany you at all times during the event and who must be familiar with the rules. We will assist if we can.

Boats: Competitors are required to bring boats (Unless pre-organized by the committee). The voyage between Great Barrier Island and the North Island is long and the sea can be rough. Please ensure that your vessel is suitable to undertake this journey and check that you have suitable forecast weather and sea conditions for your boat when undertaking this trip.
