Rare opportunity to hear performances of five colourful and diverse pieces for string quintet. First the elegant Classicism of Boccherini’s String Quintet in D, followed by the String Quintet No 15 “The Bullet” by George Onslow, in which the composer depicts a hunting accident in which he was nearly killed. The movements of this piece from 1829 dramatically depict the shooting and the composer’s recovery.The second half of the concert begins with two short works: the atmospheric Swim the Sliding Continents by Auckland-based composer Louise Webster and Postlude, a heartfelt elegy by Ukrainian composer Valentyn Silvestrov. The final piece is the richly Romantic String Quintet No 2 in G Op 77 by Dvorák.
