Dunedin Midwinter Carnival 2025

About
CANCELLATION NOTICE, 28 June 2025: The Midwinter Carnival Team and Trust has made the difficult decision to cancel tonight’s scheduled Midwinter Carnival event due to ongoing poor weather and deteriorating site conditions.
The decision was made following advice from the worsening conditions and Dunedin City Council, who have urged residents to stay home and prioritise safety amid persistent rain and wet ground conditions. The safety of our audience, performers, volunteers, crew, and site remains our highest priority.
While organisers had hoped for improved weather, current conditions make it unsafe to proceed with tonight’s event as planned.
In line with the event’s ticketing terms and conditions, refunds are not available in the event of cancellation due to extreme weather. This weekend’s weather conditions constituted a force majeure event, and the decision to cancel was made on the grounds of public safety.
As a not-for-profit charitable trust, the Midwinter Carnival is still responsible for covering the full cost of delivering the event. This includes infrastructure, staffing, artist fees, and materials — the majority of which were already committed or delivered prior to cancellation.
Despite the cancellation, organisers remain proud of what was achieved during Friday night’s Carnival, which went ahead in wet conditions.
The Midwinter Carnival Team and Trust looks forward to bringing the magic back to Ōtepoti next year.
