Shoot as many cats as you can in Lake Taupō! This is a one-day spearfishing event for new and old divers to enjoy. The rules are simple... you and your dive partner spear as many catfish as you can whilst freediving, and using a pole spear/Hawaiian sling. Also, there are prizes for the smallest, and largest, cats.
$50 adult / $25 Under 18's.

Physical Registration 6.30pm to 8.30 pm at the Motuoapa Fishing Club
Late Registration 7.00am at the Motuoapa Fishing Club.
COMPULSORY Safety Briefing for ALL COMPETITORS and BOAT SKIPPERS at 8.00am at the Motuoapa Fishing and Boating Club.
Equipment, including Pole Spears, can be purchased from Hunting and Fishing Taupō
A limited number of Wettie pole spears will be available for purchase before the briefing at $60 for a 3-piece spear.
All competitiors must be out of the water by 2.30pm or risk disqualification. Weigh in closes at 4.00pm.
Biosecurity Conditions of Entry:
No boats allowed.
All competitors are to:
- Use gear sourced from Taupō, or
- Use equipment that is not subject to Clam-specific Check, Clean, Dry protocols and which has not been used in the Waikato River and its associated lakes/streams, and Taranaki streams, rivers and lakes, including Lake Rotomanu.
- Follow Check, Clean, Dry protocols for swimsuits and dive equipment used in all other freshwater waterways. Click here for instructions.
- Sign a declaration confirming they have not entered a controlled area of the Waikato River in the last 30 days.
Any competitor in breach of the above conditions will not be permitted to enter the competition.
