This is a journey that will stay with you long after the curtain falls.The year is 1965, summertime on the South Island. Hone has moved his whānau here from their homeland, Waiora, in search of better opportunities. He has found a place at a local mill and has excelled there. In an effort to try and fit in to their new environment, Hone forbids his children from speaking Te Reo Māori and does all he can to encourage assimilation. His daughter, Amiria, embraces the change, perhaps a bit too much. His son, Boyboy, wants nothing more than to please his father. But today is Rongo's day.
It is her 18th birthday and the whānau is having a party for her at the beach. Rongo is distant, disconnected. She has not found her footing in this new land and longs for her language and her old home in Waiora. She feels the pull of the water tugging her spirit back home. They have invited two pākeha, the local school teacher and Hone's boss, who claims to be bringing good news, to celebrate with them. It should be a perfect day, but nothing is as it seems.
