The story begins in Philadelphia, where Deloris Van Cartier, a nightclub singer, dreams of stardom and performs with her backup singers at her gangster boyfriend Curtis Jackson’s club. When she witnesses Curtis commit a murder, she flees and seeks protection from the police, who hide her in a convent under the name Sister Mary Clarence.
Initially, Deloris struggles with the strict convent lifestyle, including rules against smoking, drinking, and wearing her flashy clothes. However, she gradually bonds with the nuns and discovers that the convent choir is struggling. Using her singing talent and disco-inspired energy, Deloris revitalizes the choir, bringing joy to the convent and the surrounding community. Along the way, she learns the value of friendship, sisterhood, and finding purpose beyond fame.
