Crypto Tax Workshop for Accountants
About
Doyle Accountants is producing a dedicated crypto tax workshop for accountants in public practice. This is a full-day, in-person professional development event built for partners, managers, and intermediates whose clients hold or trade cryptocurrency.Crypto is no longer a fringe issue for accountants.
More New Zealand clients are holding, trading, staking, swapping, and investing in cryptocurrency. Many are using multiple exchanges, wallets, DeFi platforms, stablecoins, NFTs, and on-chain tools. They are also increasingly turning to their accountant first when they need help understanding what is taxable, what needs to be reported, and how to get compliant with Inland Revenue.
The challenge is that crypto tax is not always straightforward.
A client may believe tax only applies when they cash out to NZD. In practice, taxable events can arise from selling, swapping, spending, gifting, moving into stablecoins, some staking and liquidity arrangements, and certain transactions where ownership or control of crypto is given up.
Records are often incomplete. Exchange exports do not always reconcile. Wallet transfers can be misclassified. DeFi activity can be difficult to interpret. Software outputs can be unreliable if the underlying data is poor. And if IRD asks questions, rough numbers and unsupported assumptions may not be enough.
This full-day, in-person workshop is designed specifically for accountants in public practice who want to better support clients with cryptocurrency activity.
It is practical, technical, and built around real client issues we see every week.
You will leave with a clearer understanding of how crypto is taxed in New Zealand, how to identify common taxable events, what records clients need to keep, how to approach crypto tax calculations, and when a matter should be referred to a specialist.
This is not a high-level crypto overview. It is a working session for accountants who want usable knowledge, practical tools, and confidence when clients ask crypto tax questions.
This workshop is designed for:
• Partners and directors in accounting firms
• Client managers and senior accountants
• Intermediate accountants who prepare tax returns
• Accountants who have clients holding or trading crypto
• Firms wanting a clearer process for crypto client onboarding
• Accountants who want to know when to handle a matter internally and when to refer it on
You do not need to be a crypto expert to attend.
The workshop is designed to meet accountants where they are. We will explain the key tax concepts, transaction types, record keeping issues, and practical workflow considerations in plain English, while still giving enough technical depth to be useful in practice.
What we will cover
Over the day, we will work through:
• How IRD currently views cryptocurrency
• The core New Zealand tax principles that apply to crypto
• What creates a taxable event
• Crypto-to-crypto swaps and stablecoin transactions
• Staking rewards, DeFi, airdrops, NFTs, and other common activity
• How crypto profit is calculated
• Cost basis issues, FIFO/WAC considerations, and matching principles
• Record keeping expectations
• What IRD may ask for in a review or audit
• Common mistakes clients make
• Why “I have not cashed out” does not mean “I have no tax issue”
• How to identify red flags in client files
• How to onboard a crypto client properly
• How to collect exchange, wallet, and transaction data
• How to approach incomplete or messy records
• How to work from real exchange data to a tax position
• How to document assumptions and methodology
• When to refer complex crypto tax work to a specialist
Hands-on case study
A key part of the workshop is a practical case study using real-world style exchange data.
We will work through the type of issues accountants actually face when a client provides crypto information: missing context, multiple platforms, taxable disposals, staking income, wallet transfers, and data that needs to be interpreted before it can be used.
The aim is not just to understand the rules. The aim is to understand the process.
By the end of the case study, you will have a better sense of what good crypto tax work looks like, what questions to ask, what evidence to request, and where the main risks sit.
What you will take away
Attendees will receive practical resources to use in their own practice, including:
• A printed workbook
• Crypto client onboarding checklist
• Record request templates
• Practical process notes
• Common taxable event guide
• Client discussion prompts
• Red flag checklist
• Referral pathway for complex crypto tax matters
You will leave with practical crypto tax knowledge you can apply immediately, plus a clearer pathway for supporting clients where the work is too complex or too risky to handle internally.
Why this matters now
IRD attention on crypto is increasing. Data matching is improving. International reporting and information sharing is expanding. Many crypto exchanges and platforms now hold detailed user information, and clients who have previously ignored crypto tax may not be able to do so forever.
For accountants, this creates both risk and opportunity.
The risk is that clients may expect advice from their accountant, even where the accountant has not had formal crypto tax training. The opportunity is that accountants who understand the fundamentals can provide better service, identify issues earlier, protect their clients, and know when specialist help is required.
Crypto tax does not need to be overwhelming, but it does need a proper process.
