North Canterbury Hunting Competition Rules and Details

- Entries close Wednesday 18th June 2025

- Weigh in Rotherham Show Grounds at 11am, final cut off 3pm, Sunday 22nd June. All animals to be presented before 3pm deadline. NO EXCEPTIONS.

- Minimum pig weight is 25kg (55lb).

- Open entry means you can enter 1 animal into each category

- Judging will be done by the North Canterbury Hunting Competition Committee. The Ridgeline Judging team will oversee the quality of the animals.

- Late entries will NOT be accepted.

- All paid open entries will go into the lucky hunter draw.

- Game must be left on display until after prize giving.

- All paid Open entries go in the draw for Major Spot Prizes - Open winners do not need to be present to win the Major Spot Prizes. Winner must organise collection of major spot prize (Ute).

- The Ute is won strictly as is where is. The winner takes full responsibility for the Ute at the completion of the competition. The North Canterbury Hunting Committee take no responsibility for the vehicle upon completion of the event.

- Winner of Junior Major Spot Prizes must be present.

- You must be present to collect all Open and Junior Hunter prizes as determined at weigh in, otherwise it will be re-drawn.

- All paid Junior Hunter entries go in the draw for Junior Spot Prizes. Junior Hunter (or guardian / parent) will need to be present at prize giving to collect these.

- All game to be offal free, with head attached. (Not including juniors)

- No barrows.

- Pen reared or domestic looking animals will not be accepted!

- Rotten or frozen game will not be accepted.

- Boars to have all male parts intact.

- In the event of two animals weighing in at the same weight, the first animal weighed in wins the category.

- One entry per person in each category.

- Entry fee Open: $50 per person.

- Junior hunter (14 years or under): $10.

- Hunters 14 years or under can enter the Open section but must pay the $50 Open entry fee and will only be eligible for the Open prizes.

- Entry fee to be provided with all entries or paid by Direct Credit at the same time as entry form being submitted. Any entries left unpaid by Wednesday 26th June 2024, will be withdrawn from the competition.

- Hunting to commence 1am Thursday 19th June 2025.

- All game remains property of the Hunter.

FERAL CAT CATEGORY RULES

- Hunting is open between the April 30th - June 22nd 2025.

- Junior hunters must be supervised by an adult while hunting 👩‍👦

- Feral cats may only be hunted with Box traps, allowing for humane capture and feral animal identification.

- Feral cats must then be killed using a minimum of a .22 rifle.

- Hunting must be well outside any residential/lifestyle block areas (10km minimum)

- Hunters must abide the New Zealand Firearms act 1983 and the Arms Regulations 1992

- Hunters must communicate with farmers and their neighbouring properties when hunting to ensure they know their boundaries and have permission to hunt feral cats.

- Humane and efficient best practice techniques must be adhered to. If in doubt do not kill.

- Cats will be scanned for microchips. Hunters will be disqualified if microchips are found

- SPCA advocates that “feral cat management is done by people who have experience and are confident in their abilities to humanely manage cats”

- Cats can be frozen, no others animals in the NCHC can be frozen and entered
