Our Food Futures: Rising Inequality and Climate Change

Thursday 24th October 2024, 6.30 - 8pm

About the lecture

The Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN estimates that more than 800 million people globally are affected by hunger. Despite rapid technological progress on many fronts (including in agricultural production) this unconscionable statistic continues to haunt us. Food banks across the developed world (including the UK and the US) are seeing unprecedented numbers with a growing cost of living crisis in the post-pandemic era.

While each country may have unique reasons for the rise in hunger, there are some factors common especially in the global south, including rising inequality, climate change induced extreme events and the economic shocks of the pandemic.

The speaker will chart the journey of what a fundamental right to food entails in law and practice. He will outline the challenges of growing inequality and climate shocks that are exacerbating the food crisis in India, and globally, and will look at how countries might respond to these challenges.

About the Speaker

Biraj Patnaik is the Executive Director of National Foundation for India, which is India’s oldest independent domestic philanthropy. Prior to joining NFI, Biraj was the South Asia Director of Amnesty International overseeing all operations in the SAARC region. A well-known human rights activist, he has been part of many national and global campaigns, including the right to food campaign in India. He has been active in the South Asia region in many campaigns and currently works on civic space issues in the region. He is a regular commentator in the media and has published widely both in academic and popular media.
