SUNDAY LECTURE: COMMON GROUND: THE HISTORY OF COMMON LAND

About
Over 1 million hectares of Britain have the status of common land - 'half wild' land over which no single individual has exclusive use rights. This talk will take a long view, charting how the use of common land has changed since the Middle Ages; how it has been claimed as communal space for purposes as diverse as trade, sport and illegal gatherings; and how the meaning of common land has changed, resulting in the multiple (and sometimes competing) values attached to it today.Angus J L Winchester
