Farrenc, Mendelssohn & Strauss
Mendelssohn - Overture: The Hebrides
Marcel Tournier - Féerie: Prélude et Danse
Strauss - Horn Concerto No. 1
Louise Farrenc - Symphony No. 3 in G minor
Kylia Tsz-Yam Pai (harp) & Joshua Davis (horn)
Peter Davis (conductor)
St Mary’s new Director of Music conducts his debut concert with the Orchestra of the Restoration. Opening with Mendelssohn’s famous and brooding concert overture, the orchestra will then showcase top prize winners from the last Nottingham Young Musician of the Year competition in Tournier’s colourful and enchanting 'Fairyland' for harp and strings, and in Strauss’ heroic first horn concerto.
We also celebrate the remarkable music of Louise Farrenc, performing her brilliant third symphony to mark the 150th anniversary of her death in 1875. This symphony has been described by Tom Service as being “as impressively energetic and structurally satisfying as any of Mendelssohn’s or Schumann’s”.
