Supporting Literacy & Numeracy in person training.
About
Reading is often a relative strength for children with Down syndrome. Being read to regularly and engaging with reading activities from an early age can significantly enhance their spoken language and memory skills. In this session, we will explore effective strategies and resources that support reading development. We will look at how a whole-word approach to reading can support a child with DS and how phonics instruction can be introduced as their skills develop.Numeracy, on the other hand, can be more challenging. It involves abstract thinking, which many children with Down syndrome find difficult. However, numeracy skills are crucial for future independence and everyday life. We will look at how numeracy skills can be supported using visual resources and what tools are available to help you assess and monitor progress.
