CNM Autumn Reception

 

 

ABOUT THE EVENT:

Join the Centre for the New Midlands for our Reimagining the Region Autumn Reception, to be held in Birmingham on Thursday 25th September from 5pm - 8.30pm.

We are delighted to be welcoming Cllr John Cotton (Leader, Birmingham City Council) as our guest speaker and Phil Upton (Broadcaster, BBC) as our host for the evening.

The format of the evening will be in the style of a fireside chat between Cllr Cotton and Phil, in which Cllr Cotton will outline the key drivers and outputs of the recently published ‘Shaping Birmingham’s Future Together for 2035’ strategy and answer questions from our members on the future of the city.

Our delegates will then be served refreshments over networking.

Please note that this event is for Members of our Reimagining the Region network. Tickets are available for non-members to purchase, but this event is primarily aimed at our members' network.

Reimagining the Region is the corporate partnership network of the Centre for the New Midlands.  This event is the Summer Reception for our members who pay an annual fee to be a part of the Centre and contribute to our work across the year.  Members pay an annual fee to join our network, based on the number of employees within their organisation, meaning that every business has the opportunity to get involved.  We do not charge our members anything else to participate in our activity throughout the year! Once you're in - you're in! Our membership rates from 1st April 2025 are:

1-10 EMPLOYEES = £450 + VAT
11-50 EMPLOYEES = £1,100 + VAT
51 + EMPLOYEES = £1,700 + VAT

Q&A with Cllr John Cotton, hosted by Phil Upton (BBC).  The first part of the session will feature will outline the key drivers and outputs of the recently published ‘Shaping Birmingham’s Future Together for 2035’ strategy and answer questions from our members on the future of the city before we open the session up to the floor for questions from our delegates.

OUR SPEAKERS:

 

 

Councillor John Cotton was elected as the Leader of Birmingham City Council in May 2023, alongside Cllr Sharon Thompson as Deputy Leader, pledging to “work with and for every single community to deliver the service improvements our citizens deserve.”

Cllr Cotton previously served as the Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety & Equalities, and was responsible for leading the city’s response to the cost-of-living crisis, tackling social and economic injustice and building stronger safer communities.

John has previously held Cabinet portfolios covering adult social care, public health and housing, which also reflect his passionate interest in tackling the root causes of poverty and disadvantage.

As Leader, John has pledged to continue his to improve the lives and life chances of the people of Birmingham and help our communities through the continuing cost-of-living crisis.  A member of both the Labour and Co-operative parties, he was first elected to Birmingham City Council in 1999 and represents the Glebe Farm and Tile Cross Ward in the east of the city. John was born and raised in Birmingham.

Over the course of a varied career, he has worked in private industry, in the office of a Labour MP, in the voluntary sector and as a freelance public affairs consultant. John is also National Chair of Labour Housing Group, the Labour Party’s official affiliated organisation dedicated to developing housing policy to addresses the shortage of decent affordable housing across the UK.

 

 

 

Phil Upton is one of the most recognisable voices in the Midlands having been on air in the region for more than 30 years via BRMB, Heart, BBC WM and his present home, the Breakfast Show on BBC CWR broadcasting live from the 2021 City of Culture every morning from 6-10am

He’s a regular correspondent for Midlands Today, the Politics Show and Inside Out on BBC1 and his years as a club DJ and then host and compère of black tie awards and charity fundraisers means he brings an integrity and authenticity to any event he’s involved in. 

Away from the microphone he can be found cycling - a lot! His charity bike rides have raised over £3m for Midlands causes and he is the cycling ambassador for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and UHB Trust.

Formerly the location of the iconic 1970’s Rum Runner Nightclub, the Rum Runner Works is located just off Broad Street and  forms part of the vibrant Regency Wharf.The site is well located within short walking distance of the three main railway stations, Birmingham Snow Hill, Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham New Street.  The Metro also passes in front of the site.
