Facilitator / Run a Bereavement Group Training
About
How to Become a Certified Grief Support Group FacilitatorRun a Bereavement Café or Grief Support Group Safely, Confidently and With Care
Hosting a grief support group is not about being kind, empathetic, or a good listener over a cup of tea.
It is skilled, emotionally demanding work.
Done well, it can be life-changing.
Done poorly, it can cause real harm.
Due to growing demand, we have created an official training and certification programme for those who want to run a Bereavement Café or structured grief support group in their own community.
As an award-winning service trusted by hundreds of grieving people, we take safety, language and best practice seriously. This programme exists to ensure every group is led with confidence, care and responsibility.
This in-depth training is delivered by bereavement specialists and coaches with real, lived experience. You will learn:
• How to manage a room and hold a group safely, not just individuals
• How to set clear boundaries and agreements from the start
• How to balance voices so no one dominates or disappears
• How to respond when emotions escalate in the room
• How to manage silence, overwhelm, anger and distress without rushing to fix
• How to read group dynamics and intervene when needed
• How to hold space while keeping everyone emotionally safe
You will also learn:
• What helpful and harmful language really looks like
• How to avoid outdated grief myths and platitudes
• How to recognise risk and know when to signpost or escalate
• How to facilitate responsibly when you may be holding life-and-death moments
This training acknowledges a hard truth: running a grief group carries responsibility. Poor boundaries, unhelpful language or lack of confidence in managing a room can cause further harm to someone already struggling. We do not take that lightly.
On completion, you will receive:
• Certified Facilitator status
• A full Bereavement Café / Grief Support Group toolkit
• Practical session structure and guidance
• Ongoing professional support
• Your group listed on our national website
This is more than a course.
It is a community of trained facilitators doing this work properly.
