Strategies to Involve Parents in Children's Reading

Jon Biddle is an experienced primary school teacher and English lead, with over two decades of classroom practice spanning Newham and more recently, Moorlands Primary Academy in Norfolk. A passionate advocate for Reading for Pleasure, Jon has been recognised nationally, winning the 2018 RfP Experienced Teacher of the Year award and contributing to the 2021 RfP School of the Year award. He serves on the UKLA National Council, advises Empathy Lab and regularly shares practice on the Open University RfP site.Jon also writes a regular Reading for Pleasure column for NEU Educate magazine, contributes to a range of publications and is part of the editorial team for English 4–11. A dedicated reader of children’s literature, he has a particular love of graphic novels.
In this session, Jon will explore practical, sustainable ways to involve parents and carers in their children’s reading both at home and in school. He’ll share strategies teachers can implement straight away, discuss common challenges and offer ideas grounded in real classroom experience. Delegates will also have the chance to reflect on what has (and hasn’t) worked in their own settings.
