This hands-on ekphrastic workshop is designed to encourage poets of all levels to discover some of the many connections between poetry and art.
To help poets find inspiration and new ways of thinking about and engaging with works of art by using creative language to create poetic responses to the work of George Macpherson RSA showing in the exhibition : Ceòl na Tìr-dhàimh | The Music of Home, showing in the gallery 28th March - 17th May.
Links between artistic technique and poetry, such as shape, line, space, composition, image/imagery and texture will be explored through lively writing exercises. Please bring an energetic and curious mind.
Writing materials will be provided, but please bring your one if you wish.
Please bring a packed lunch or visit local shops/ cafes during the short lunch break. Tea and Coffee provided.

Born in Invershin and educated at Golspie High School, George Macpherson RSA attended Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1958 and winning the RSA Stuart Prize the same year. He travelled to Spain for the Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship in 1959, and in 1960 he returned to Edinburgh to take up the position of Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, a position he held until his retirement in 1990.
Macpherson's painting took great inspiration from his childhood in the Highlands, living close by the River Shin. He also sought influence from a continued involvement with nature and from his love of music. Macpherson was an esteemed accordionist, and his abstract work gave a visual representation of the interplay of Gaelic song and traditional Scottish music.
George Macpherson was elected to the Society of Scottish Artists in 1966 and as Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1987, being made a full Academician in 2005.
Keren Macpherson trained as a painter at Edinburgh College of Art. She lived in the U.S. for 15 years mostly teaching and creating art. Keren completed her MLitt in Creative Writing with a Distinction in Poetry at Dundee University in 2015, has recently completed the MFA in Poetry at St. Andrews University and is currently undertaking a PhD in Poetry at St. Andrews. She has had several poems published in New Writing Dundee and Dundee Writes. Her work also appears in Seagate III, Scotia Extremis, and Poetry Scotland. Keren’s own pamphlet, ‘A Grazing Light’ was published by Mateznik Press in May 2024. She is one of three organisers of Platform Poetry in Fife. Keren’s poems often take an ekphrastic slant while others are of a more personal nature. In addition to her poetry and art Keren is a keen hill, trail and road runner.
