CSYO Spring Concert 2026
About
Aaron Copland - Fanfare for the Common ManAaron Copland - Music for a Great City
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto in D Major
Join our city's talented young musicians as they perform Copland's celebratory music dedicated to the London Symphony Orchestra and the great city of London, though almost certainly inspired by the great city of New York. This exciting piece will highlight our incredible wind, brass and percussion sections in a sonic depiction of a bustling, modern metropolis. Come on a journey with the orchestra through the sights and sounds of this moody city.
Our brass and percussion will herald the start of the concert with Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, a piece that honours the ordinary citizen with its soaring melody and profound sense of dignity and strength.
In contrast, the strings will be at centre stage for Tchaikosvky's lyrical and passionate Violin Concerto in D. We are delighted that local musical celebrity and our very own, inspirational violin tutor, Martin Cropper, will be bringing his own passion and virtuosity to this performance. No one can write a melody so well as Tchaikovsky, and this favourite of the repertoire offers a real treat for the soloist, orchestra and audience alike, with its rich, passionate soundscape, bridging deep Slavic melancholy with vibrant Cossack-dance energy.
The City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra is one of the UK's leading independent youth orchestras. CSYO provides valuable orchestral and musical training for young musicians of the region between 13 and 21.
CSYO is a unique youth orchestra, offering membership to students up to the age of 21. Many of our older students are at college or university, training to be professional musicians. But we also have many students studying other subjects who want to keep performing at a high level. And we have plenty turning 22 who don’t want to leave!
