Guest Speaker
Mik rose to prominence in the 1990s as one of the world’s first disabled television presenters, becoming a familiar face on Channel 4 and winning an Emmy in 1992 for his work on the children’s programme Beat That. Alongside his media career, he toured Europe as a musician and composed for TV and radio, blending creativity with advocacy in everything he does.
Today, Mik is recognised as one of the most influential disabled people in the UK. He works as an inclusion and equality trainer and has contributed to major national projects, including accessibility development for the London 2012 Olympic Park. He now serves as Co‑CEO of the charity Phab, where he leads programmes that mentor and develop the next generation of disabled access professionals.
Here are some of the themes he can explore with us today:
- Breaking barriers in media — what it meant to become one of the first disabled presenters on mainstream television
- Creativity as advocacy — using music, storytelling and broadcasting to shift perceptions
- Inclusion done properly — what true accessibility looks like in practice, not just policy
- Designing for everyone — insights from his work on the London 2012 Olympic Park
- Leadership through lived experience — why representation at decision‑making levels matters
- The future of disability inclusion in the UK — where progress is happening and where it’s still needed
- Resilience and reinvention — navigating a career across media, music, advocacy and charity leadership while staying true to purpose
