About

Join Joanna MacGregor as she dives deeper into the music of our October concert, The Stravinsky Connection.

Stravinsky and Mozart both share an effortless brilliance: a way of composing with a magician’s touch. But they’re two composers with an acute awareness of musical history, forever innovating with freshness and energy. Mozart’s gorgeous, at times shocking, Gran Partita is the perfect partner for Stravinsky’s snazzy Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments.

We’ll unravel the beauty of Mozart’s 50-minute work for wind, horns and basset horns, revealing the latest scholarship about this extraordinary work. We’ll look at how Stravinsky’s piano concerto, and his Symphonies of Wind Instruments, are deep homages to earlier composers, disguised by Stravinsky’s typically jazzy wit and panache.

Designed to illuminate and entertain, our new series The Listening Club delves deep into this season’s music, uncovering composers’ intentions, social context, and musical motifs to listen out for. Most importantly, we’ll have fun.

‘Thanks too for Joanna’s concise but cogent introductions. The enthusiasm of her live comments makes these performances that bit more special!’ – Andrew Connal
