Supporting Young People with Grief 11-16
About
Supporting Young People Who Are GrievingA Grief Awareness Workshop for Professionals
**This is for those who work with young people in a professional capacity**
Working with young people means you will come across grief — whether it’s recent or something they’ve been carrying for years.
The challenge is, most of us have never been taught how to recognise it, understand it, or respond in a way that truly helps.
This 90-minute workshop is designed to give you a clear, practical understanding of grief in young people aged 11–16, and the confidence to start supporting them safely and compassionately.
⸻
What you’ll learn:
* What grief is and how it can show up in teenagers
* Why grief doesn’t follow a timeline (and isn’t “over” after 6 or 12 months)
* How grief can present as behaviour, withdrawal, anger or disengagement
* The cumulative nature of grief and how past losses can resurface
* The ripple effects of loss on family life, friendships, school and identity
* How to create a safe and supportive environment within school
* Practical ways to start conversations without saying the wrong thing
* How to build a grief-aware culture that supports all young people
⸻
Who this is for:
This workshop is ideal for:
* High school teachers
* Pastoral staff
* Safeguarding leads
* Teaching assistants
Why attend:
Grief is often misunderstood, and young people are frequently expected to “get back to normal” far too quickly.
This session will help you recognise what’s really going on beneath the surface, respond with confidence, and become a safe, supportive adult in a young person’s life.
This is valuable, informative, and up-to-date basic grief awareness training — designed to help you start supporting a young person in your care.
⸻
Further Development:
After attending, there are opportunities to access deeper, more in-depth workshops to continue building your knowledge, confidence, and whole-school approach.
