Avebury Stone Circle Hike

Join WalkTalk Surrey leader Paul on this amazing historical hike taking in Avebury, Windmill Hill, Waden Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow Walk. finishing at Stone Avenue and the Stone Circle.
 

A varied walk through the Avebury World Heritage landscape. Avebury is home to the largest stone circle in the world. Starting at the Avebury National Trust Museum, then heading out to Windmill Hill, Waden Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow before returning via the Stone Avenue and Avebury Stone Circle.

• Date and Time: Saturday 24^th October meeting at 0930
• Start and finish: We will meet at Avebury. Meet point outside the National Trust Museum for a walk through the Avebury landscape, returning to the village at the end.

• Car Parking: The National Trust car park is approx. 300m from the stone circle and 500m from the facilities at the National Trust Museum and café.
• Route: From Avebury National Trust Museum, we walk to Windmill Hill, then to Waden Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow, before visiting the Stone Avenue and Avebury Stone Circle.
• Duration: Around 5-6 hours at a steady pace, allowing time to pause at the main prehistoric sites.
• Distance: Approximately 10 miles / 16 km, depending on the whether we walk to/from the Stone Avenue at the end.

• Difficulty: Moderate, with open downland, field paths, tracks and some gentle climbs. Paths may be muddy or uneven after wet weather.
• Refreshments: Cafés and facilities are available in Avebury village before or after the walk; please bring water and any snacks you may want on the route. The National Trust café is excellent; toilets on site also.
• Dogs welcome. Please bring a short lead for road crossings, livestock areas and busier sections around Avebury and the monuments.

• Avebury National Trust: Recognised as a World Heritage Site for its Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments.  Avebury is home to the largest stone circle in the world.
• Windmill Hill: An important Neolithic causewayed enclosure with wide views across the surrounding Wiltshire countryside.
• Waden Hill: A grassy ridge offering fine views over the Avebury landscape, including nearby prehistoric monuments.
• West Kennet Long Barrow: One of the best-known Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain, set above the Kennet valley.
• Stone Avenue and Avebury Stone Circle: The final section visits the avenue of standing stones and the vast Avebury circle, giving a memorable finish to the route.
