Lenham to Wye Along the North Downs Way

A linear Kent Downs walk following the North Downs Way from Lenham station to Wye station, passing chalk landscapes, quiet lanes, historic villages, the Lenham Memorial Cross, vineyards near Westwell, and the Stour Valley before returning by train.

Trail Notes & Tips

· Difficulty: Moderate. This is a longer linear walk, but generally less hilly than some Surrey Hills routes, with field paths, lanes, woodland edges and open downland sections that may be muddy after rain.

· Refreshments: Options in Lenham before the start and back at Lenham.

· Travel: Will need to check train times and engineering works nearer the time. National Rail notes that personalised timetables are normally available around 12 weeks ahead.

· Dogs welcome. The route is mostly dog friendly, but please bring a short lead for lanes, livestock, other walkers and station areas.

Historical highlights along the route

· Lenham Memorial Cross: Soon after joining the route, look out for the large chalk cross cut into the hillside, a listed memorial to local lives lost in the First and Second World Wars.

· The Pilgrims’ Way: Much of this section follows the historic corridor associated with medieval pilgrimage routes towards Canterbury.

· The Kent Weald: The walk gives broad views across the Weald, a landscape name rooted in the Old English word for forest.

· Westwell and local vineyards: The North Downs Way passes close to vineyards near Westwell, a reminder of Kent’s growing reputation for English wine.

· Wye and the Great Stour: The route finishes in Wye near the River Great Stour, with the station conveniently placed for the train journey home.
