About

Ancient Woodland Restoration in practice - Great How (Thirlmere)

As part of our ongoing PAWS (Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site) project, we've got a site visit to Great How. Great How is a good example of the different conditions of PAWS, it has a well-managed SSSI and broadleaf plantations. It also has conifer plantations, which present their own challenges and a host of ancient woodland features, which require different levels of work.

Who is running the session? Jamie Chaplin-Brice, (Ancient Woodland Advisor, Cumbria Woodlands), Andrew Wright (Woodland Officer, United Utilities), Dan Castell (Woodland Biodiversity Officer, United Utilities)

What's the course about?- The threats and condition of Ancient Woodland, and remedial works associated with restoration. Seeing and learning about the challenges of terrain, access, sensitive sites and the associated costs .

Accessibility-  Public Footpath - Around half is steep steps, singletrack footpath, boardwalk, loose under foot in places, the other half is well metalled forestry road.
