About

Join WalkTalk Surrey hike leader Paul for a spectacular 11-mile circular hike across the stunning Marlborough Downs! Starting and finishing at the atmospheric Iron Age hillfort of Barbury Castle, we'll be treading in the footsteps of our ancestors along The Ridgeway—one of Britain’s oldest trackways. Expect sweeping arable fields, open skies, and incredible chalk downland views as the path undulates westwards.

At 18km, this is a highly rewarding day out. We're starting bright and early to make the absolutely most of the daylight and the rolling landscape.

Driving: From M4 Junction 15, take the A346 towards Marlborough. Keep an eye out for signs to Chiseldon, then follow the signs leading you up to Barbury Castle.

Kit List & Trail Tips
As always on a DG adventure, come prepared! The chalk and grassy tracks can get very muddy and slippery after rain, and the high ridge offers little shelter from strong winds or winter weather.

Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof walking boots are essential.

Clothing: Waterproof jacket and trousers, plus a warm hat and gloves.

Safety: Please pack a headtorch or standard torch just in case.

Fuel: There are no cafés or refreshment stops out on the ridge. Bring a packed lunch, plenty of trail snacks, and enough water for the full 5-6 hour hike.

Post-Walk Social
No DG walk is complete without a well-earned drink! After we finish the loop, we have an optional stop planned at The Plough on the Hill in Badbury. It’s a characterful 16th-century gastropub located just a minute from M4 Junction 15, making it an incredibly convenient stop before heading back down the A3 or M3 towards Guildford.

Ready to get outdoors? Grab your boots, pack your rucksack, and let's get out on those hills. See you at the castle!
