Honour Choir was formed in 2014 for a project by Quays Culture to commemorate the outbreak of World War 1, involving hundreds of local people from all walks of life. The original performance piece was a 40 minute, large–scale multimedia spectacular featuring actors, musicians, film and a choir in a powerful performance to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the war. The event took place at MediaCityUK for a crowd of over 5000, who heard the first performance of Andrew J Smith’s composition, ‘Honour’. Following requests from original choir members, Honour Choir was reformed and, in May 2015, performed in Cornelia Parker’s War Room in The Whitworth Art Gallery. Since then the choir have performed across the north west at commemoration events during the anniversary period. Honour Choir officially ended in 2020 with a review of all it had achieved, including taking the choir to the Menin Gate to perform.
Honour Choir was relaunched in 2024 joining forces with the North West Combined Choirs Chorale, an association of several choirs across the northwest to perform Faure Requiem and the Honour song cycle, once again singing at the Menin Gate ceremony and around the battlefields of Belgium. This choir also had the honour of performing at the National Memorial Arboretum for Armed Forces Day.
Now more than ever is the time to remember the lessons of the past in the hope of peace for the future. Honour Choir continue to perform across the North West, blending music with specifically created spoken word to tell local stories.
