About

Join local author and playwright Elaine Pritchard for a fascinating Saturday morning talk celebrating two of Burton’s most creative and innovative entrepreneurs: George Orton and Charles Spooner.

Set inside the historic Langan’s Tea Rooms, the location offers a perfect view of The Ritz across the way—a state-of-the-art, lavishly decorated 1930s cinema originally built and opened by the company Orton and Spooner established.

Starting out in the late Victorian era, Orton & Spooner put Burton on the global map for visionary fairground rides, ornate showfronts, and luxurious living wagons.

2027 marks 50 years since George Orton, Sons and Spooner closed its doors on Victoria Crescent for the last time. While many remember the firm in its later engineering years, few know the incredible full story—one involving lions, tigers, and bears; thrill-a-second fairground rides; the 1951 Festival of Britain; the Boer War; the Royal Family, and even the D-Day landings!
