About

How do we change the lives of people who rely on the social care system?

Twenty-five years on what has really changed for the 1.5million people with learning disabilities in the UK, since Valuing People 2001?

You're invited to a practical lunchtime conversation on thinking differently. Tight budgets don't have to mean less, or accepting the same outcomes that leave everyone frustrated. Learn how direct payments can ease pressure on outdated day services, and leave with practical tips you can use straight away.

Powering Possibilities CIC invites you to join Sue and Malcolm Blackwell, who refused the ceilings others placed on their daughter Jen, born with Down's syndrome, and Helen Allen of Community Catalysts.

SIX WAYS TO CHANGE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

1. Money isn't the obstacle: Social care is underfunded. Direct payments can go further than you think.

2. Think differently: Challenge the status quo. Always look for the alternative.

3. Stop the same old: Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is madness.

4. No one does it alone: It takes a community. Appointing a PA is the start, not the finish.

5. Listen keenly: To the person, and to the people who know them best.

6. Find the gold: Help every person find their purpose. Everyone has a nugget of gold within.

Real examples from adult social care and the Blackwells' personal experiences and breakout discussions to explore solutions and next steps.
