"Come as you are #Berlin“  (7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.)

What happens when Syrian dancers, who have worked on dance shows like "Aladdin" and ballet shows in their homeland, meet the contemporary European (Berlin) dance scene? Can a person overcome the history of his body and start a new journey?

TOTAL BRUTAL shows the process of rapprochement and integration of refugees into the European dance scene. The focus of the project is on the physical hurdles of their everyday lives, on their physical-mental processes of change, restarting life in the big city.

"Come as you are" is the physical and theatrical exploration of three performers, whose dance background is radically different from the Berlin scene, who have arrived and who try to find their way around it. Their new personal impressions of the local cultural scene, their hopes, fears and daily experiences, which could quickly turn into nightmares, flow into the play.

Choreography, text & costume: Nir de Volff / TOTAL BRUTAL
Dancers: Medhat Aldaabal, Moufak Aldoabl, Fransisco Bejarano Montes de Oca (original role by Amr Karkout)
Lighting Asier Solana Arce

followed by KLEZMER CEILIDH with band Kleyne Klezmer  and caller Fiona Frank
With Simon Carlyle (tuba) Andrew Gardiner (clarinet) and Jan Waterfield (accordion).   Klezmer is the wedding and celebration music of Eastern European Jewish communities from the last century and beyond; our musicians have a deep love and understanding of the music and its history and you'll find yourself transported to the Russian Shtetl for the night!   We'll guide you round the dances so you don't need to know what you're doing.

This event is part of Refugee Festival Scotland, which  celebrates the contribution refugees make to life in Scotland – the food and drink, music and poetry, dance, visual art and ideas that people bring with them when they seek safety in Scotland. From Thursday 20 – Sunday 30 June 2019, the festival offers people from different backgrounds the chance to meet and celebrate together: to sample a little of each other’s cultures, listen to each other’s stories and get to know each other better.  This year, the theme of Refugee Festival Scotland is Making Art, Making Home, which aims to showcase the talent, creativity and resilience of New Scots artists and community groups. Arts, culture and sport are important in creating spaces for old and new Scots alike to meet and learn more about each other, breaking down barriers and highlighting the vibrancy and diversity of Scotland’s communities.
